    Community

The Simi Valley community has certainly changed and developed since it became incorporated on October 10, 1969. It is believed that the name of the Chumash Indian Village Shimijiis the origin of the word Simi. Originally our valley, that is 700 to 1,000 feet about sea level, was inhabited by the Chumash Indians in two villages: Simi and Tapo. El Rancho San Jose de Garcia de Simi was granted to Santiago Pico and Luis Pena by Gov. Deigo de Borica of Spanish California in 1795. The land grant was one of the largest ever made and approximately 100,000 acres.

"Community" in Simi Valley is close to the hearts of many dedicated residents who serve on various boards and communities to make our city a better place. With numerous community service organizations that enrich the lives of those in need, residents of Simi Valley have access to many community resources that residents of other communities may not have so readily available. The community services that we depend on like the Fire and Police Departments and road maintenance are funded through the general fund. Over 20% of the City of Simi Valley's general funds come from 1% of the sales tax applied when you make purchases in the City of Simi Valley. This sales tax amounts to about $18 million each year. At DayInSimiValley.com we proudly support the Shop Simi Valley First program because we understand how important tax dollars are to the beauty and the safety of Simi Valley, the place Simi Valley residents call home.

The community of Simi Valley is located close to Hollywood and that has made it a convenient location for the film industry. Both the City of Simi Valley and the surrounding hills have been the site of several television series. Shows like Gunsmoke, M*A*S*H and Little House on the Prairie filmed locally have been long time favorites. The Corriganville Park is the old site of the original Corriganville Movie Ranch, first open to the public in 1949. Created by Ray "Crash" Corrigan, the area was the production site for many movies and television shows. Trail markers at the park give history into the Corriganville area history. Simi Valley is a community built on history and advanced by growth. It's a great place to live or visit and you certainly can't beat the weather!
